Background
Information
What
is a domain name?
A domain name is a unique alpha-numeric name used to identify
a particular computer (i.e. web server or mail server) on the
Internet. It allows ordinary users connected to the Internet to
find web sites and send e-mail to addresses with familiar names
such as yourname.com; without having to memorize the numeric addresses
that actually locate the computers or servers on the Internet.
What
is a Top Level Domain?
A top level domain (TLD) is the suffix that is attached to the
end of a domain name. For example, in the domain name yourname.com,
.com is the TLD.
What
top level domains (TLD) does Smart-Register.com offer for registration?
Smart-Register.com provides the registration service for the .com,
.net and .org domains.
How
much does registering a domain name cost?
The cost of registering a domain name is only HKD$ 150 per year.
You may select a registration period ranging from 1 to 10 years.
There are no other fees, no NIC fees, no setup fees and no domain
parking fees.
Registering
Domain Names
How
do I register a domain name with Smart-Register.com?
Step 1. Check for domain name availability. During this step,
you will perform a WHOIS query to determine if the domain name
you wish to register is available.
Step 2. Confirm intention to register. During this step, confirm
that you wish to register the domain name you have chosen.
Step 3.Fill in contact information. During this step you will
create a user name and password profile; which is used to identify
your account in Smart-Register.com systems. If you are an existing
user, you should enter the user name and password you have created
to identify your account. However, you may have more than one
profile¦ to manage your domain names registered. You must
provide administrative and organizational information to associate
with your domain name registration.
Step 4. Review the information for accuracy.
Step 5. Enter payment information and submit your request.
During this step you must enter your credit card billing information
and submit the registration for processing. If your credit card
is accepted, you will receive a confirmation screen.
What
do I need in order to register a domain name?
To register a domain name with Smart-Register.com, you only need
to specify the contact information and credit card billing information
associated with your domain name. You do not need to specify a
NIC handle, DNS server information or an IP Address; Smart-Register.com
will supply default DNS and IP information for your domain name
during the registration process, which can be edited at any time
after the registration is complete.
How
long does the registration take?
It is instant. Your registration will be completed online. As
soon as you submit and receive the "successful" message
it is ready. Confirmation e-mail is also sent right away. However,
it may take 24-72 hours (standard Internet propagation time) until
they are accessible.
Is
it possible for another person to register my domain name after
I have registered it?
Availability of .com, .net and .org domain name is verified by
all accredited registrars through the SRS (Shared Registration
System), a universal database of available .com, .net and .org
domain names. This system prevents a domain name that is successfully
registered through Smart-Register.com from being registered through
another name registration site.
What
method of payment does Smart-Register.com accept?
A valid Visa and MasterCard is currently
the only means of payment accepted.
Do
I own the domain I registered?
Yes. It is yours to sell, keep and do whatever you like as long
as you maintain the yearly registration fees.
Can
I transfer domains to you from other registrars?
Currently we are processing only new registrations. But our transfer
module will be completed very soon and you will be able to renew
your domain names at our rates by transferring them to us. Transfer
module will be announced as soon as it becomes ready.
Managing
Domain Names
What
is Domain Manager?
It is a web-based interface that enables you to login and access
to your registered domain information real-time for maintenance,
update, and editing purposes. With our Domain Manager, in case
of a change in any of the registration information, you don't
have to update every single domain's data one by one. With one
login and one click, you will be able to update all your domains
at once. You can divide your domains into groups as well, by using
different profiles for each group. When you are registering a
new domain, if you choose the "use existing profile"
option this domain will be in the same group as the profile used.
Can
I edit my domain name and registration period?
No. Once your registration is completed, your domain name and
registration period is sent to the root servers of InterNIC. After
that, the domain name itself and the registration period cannot
be changed.
How
long does it take for my information to be updated?
Once you modify your domain information, it is instantly updated
on our server. However, it may take 24-72 hours (standard Internet
propagation time) for root servers of InterNIC to reflect the
updates.
How
do I change my Domain Name Servers (DNS) information listed as
authoritative for my domain name?
Login to Domain Manager program using your domain name, username
and password. Click on the "Name Servers" link at the
top. In the next screen type the new name servers in place of
existing primary and secondary name servers. You should type only
the names, not the IP numbers. Make sure you do not have spaces
at the beginning or end of the name. Click "Save Configuration"
and the system will automatically find the IP numbers and update
your record.
How
can my hosting company update my domain information?
You will need to set-up your hosting company as a sub-user in
the domain management area. You will be able to assign them a
password and specify which information they are allowed to modify.
Can
I sell or transfer ownership of my domain?
Yes. You can login to Domain Manager and change all contact information
to the new owner. Then provide the new owner with the username
and password, and tell him to change the password. Please note
that this does not work if you are keeping multiple domains under
one profile. First you should separate that particular domain's
profile using "Manage Profile" and then "Change
Profile of Domain" options under Domain Manager. It is also
advised that in selling domain names you protect yourself with
written documentation to avoid possible legal disputes.
I
have forgotten my password (and/or username), what can I do?
Email domainhelp@Smart-Domain.com with your request including
your domain name or order ID. Your Username and Password will
be sent to the admin contact e-mail address. That is an important
reason to have a valid admin contact e-mail address entered during
the registration.
My
domains are not under one profile. How can I put them together?
Using Domain Manager, click on "Manage Profile" and
then "Change Profile of Domain". In the next screen
type the username and password of the profile to which you are
trying to move this domain. Mark the "Move to existing profile"
box and type one of the domain names of the profile to which you
are trying to move this domain. Click "Change Profile".
All
my domains are under one profile. How can I put a domain under
a separate profile?
Using Domain Manager, click on "Manage Profile" and
then "Change Profile of Domain". In the next screen
type a new username and password for the new profile you are creating.
Click "Change Profile".
Other
General Information
What
if my desired name is the same as a trademarked name?
Generally, if you've registered the name in good faith, it's not
a name belonging to an internationally known company, and you
can show that you have a legitimate reason to use that name then
you are likely to be able to keep that name. That may not be the
case if it can be shown that you purchased the name for the express
purpose of re-selling it to a company with a legitimate claim
to the name. Please see the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy
for details.
What
is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a tool to retrieve the registration information of a
domain name, including the registrant's name, contact information,
and record creation date.
I
received a confirmation that my domain registration had been processed
but when I do a WHOIS, it says that my domain is available. What
happened?
If you use our WHOIS utility you will not encounter this problem
because our database is updated immediately. Network Solutions
database is usually updated once a day, but sometimes it takes
two or three days. In other WHOIS searches, until their database
is updated, your domain will show as not being registered. However
it is registered, and can not be reserved by another person. To
make sure your domain is registered, use our WHOIS utility.
How
much Web space do I get?
Smart-Register.com is a virtual domain name parking site. We do
not support any Web space on our servers.
